Employers Face Heavy Fines for Failing to Insure Workers In Saudi

Employers in Saudi Arabia have received a strong warning from the Council of Health Insurance (CHI), which emphasizes that failure to provide health insurance for the families of employees will result in harsh penalties, including fines of up to SAR 10,000 per employee.

Family Coverage Is Required
Employers are legally obligated to offer medical coverage for their employees as well as their dependents, such as spouses and children, under Saudi Arabia’s Cooperative Health Insurance (CHI) system. The CHI has reaffirmed that failing to fulfill this duty is against labor laws and will lead to severe enforcement measures.

Increasing Penalties for Non-Compliant Businesses that disregard the risk associated with the health insurance mandate:

Penalties for each uncovered employee can reach SAR 10,000.

Business operations are halted until compliance is verified.

Legal repercussions, such as potential prohibitions on employing foreigners

Additionally, the CHI has cautioned that repeat offenders might be subject to double fines and additional penalties, like limitations on their ability to obtain commercial licenses.

What Caused the Crackdown?
The Saudi government has been working harder to guarantee that all citizens, including foreigners, have access to comprehensive healthcare. The most recent warning from the CHI is in line with Vision 2030’s objectives of raising living standards and guaranteeing ethical labor practices.

Many foreign workers depend on insurance offered by their employers to pay for their families’ medical bills. Workers may experience financial hardship when seeking medical attention if they lack adequate coverage, which could result in more significant social and economic issues.

What Companies Need to Do
To stay out of trouble, companies need to enroll every employee and their dependents in a health insurance plan that has been approved. Make sure you maintain coverage by promptly renewing your policies. Use the CHI’s web portal to confirm coverage details. In the event that their employers do not provide the necessary insurance, the CHI has also urged employees to report infractions.
